Use legal means to apply for land – GREL to some host communities
The management of Ghana Rubber Estate Limited (GREL) has expressed concern over recent attacks on its staff and properties by some residents of some of their host communities in the Western Region.
Speaking at the inauguration and handover of a community center to the residents of Nyanso in Tarkwa-Nsuayem Municipality, General Affairs Manager Perry Acheampong lamented how these actions by the residents affected their working lately.
“Some unscrupulous people from a few of our communities in the operational area have unfortunately taken the laws into their own hands and caused extremely regrettable damage and destruction to GREL personnel and property in recent times. This behavior is unacceptable,” he said.
Mr. Acheampong stated that GREL will explore and use all legal means to prosecute the perpetrators of these despicable acts.
“We call on all well-meaning leaders, our revered chiefs and elders to strongly condemn these criminal actions of the few, as it negates the majority of the tremendous good,” he added.
“GREL will respond favorably and undertake CSR projects only in communities ready to live in peace with us,” he said.
On the community center built for the Nyanso community, Mr. Acheampong said, it is part of a testimony to the development that cordial and peaceful coexistence brings to communities and nations.
He explained that the provision of such equipment is essential for the rubber company, as it creates and maintains a strong relationship with its stakeholders to improve the livelihoods of residents in their operational communities.
“This is done by sticking firmly to our sustainability policy of respecting human rights, responsible development of our operations and best management practices in accordance with national and international laws, regulations and conventions.”
“Our local communities cannot be developed by the Government of Ghana and the Municipal Assembly alone. You need the private sector just as the private sector needs you. You need GREL just as GREL needs you for peaceful coexistence and mutual development”.
The Chief of Nyano, Nana Essoun Kuma II on behalf of the elders and residents of Nyanso community, expressed deep gratitude to Ghana Rubber Estate Limited for responding quickly to their needs in the community.
He is committed to the full maintenance of the facility for future generations to benefit from the building.
Nyanso Community Center Project
The construction of the community center follows a request from the chiefs and inhabitants of Nyanso.
According to GREL management, this followed several stakeholder engagements and durbars, as part of efforts to secure broader community buy-in.
The community center will serve as a social center for residents, hosting wedding receptions, visitors attending the festival and funerals of loved ones.
The presence of the community center should reduce the amount of money spent on renting tents and awnings by community members each time there is a program.
The cost of installation is estimated at 306,644.03¢
