A majority of open source developers are eyeing new job opportunities amid the “Great Resignation”, which has seen workloads increase dramatically, according to a report from database management software vendor EDB.

The report, based on a survey of more than 1,400 app developers and IT, operations and business management professionals globally, shows that despite some satisfaction, 44% of developers were considering always job opportunities. Another 10 percent of respondents were dissatisfied with their current job.

Only 46% of respondents said they were satisfied with their current role, according to the report.

The possibility of an enhanced career path, lack of proper mentoring, and better access to training, other than salary and benefits, were found to be the top reasons respondents consider new opportunities. , details the report, adding that almost 67% of respondents say they have had an increase in the volume of work entrusted to them in the past 12 months.

Developers prefer access to advanced technologies

Nearly 43% of respondents cited improved career path options as the main reason for looking for a new job, compared to just 24% who cited the same reason in the previous survey in 2021.

Another survey metric showed that almost 32% of respondents would consider leaving their current job for the opportunity to work with more advanced technologies, a double jump from just 16% of respondents agreeing to the idea in 2021.

Additionally, nearly 38% of respondents said they would consider leaving their current position for an opportunity where they would benefit from proper mentoring, while 30% of respondents voted in favor of a workplace with better access to training and certifications.

Implementing programs is the key to employee retention

Among satisfied respondents, nearly 21% said their company had a mentorship program in place. In contrast, more than 43% of dissatisfied respondents said their organization had not implemented any remote training and mentoring programs in the past year.

To retain talent, organizations must not only deploy initiatives to support better career path options, better opportunities for mentoring and ongoing training, but also implement them properly, the report recommends.
