The internet stands by a man whose wife used his money to pay for his own luxury birthday present
On Thursday, a frustrated Redditor took to the platform’s “Am I the A ** hole” forum to describe a conflict between him and his wife: Unbeknownst to him, the anonymous wife allegedly used money from her bank account to pay for her lavish birthday present. . Since circulating on the site, the post has garnered considerable attention, racking up 10,400 votes at the time of writing.
It is common knowledge that money can be a source of stress in romantic relationships.
“Money is the main thing couples fight for, especially at the beginning,” clinical psychologist and certified financial planner Dr. Brad Klontz explained in a recent episode of Real Simple’s. Confidential money Podcast.
“If you get married, your financial life is closely tied,” he added. According to Dr Klontz, the financial debates that arise for couples are not always as straightforward as combining funds or keeping them separate – rather, he explained, these are complex conflicts that require honest conversations and involved.
In the case of this particular Redditor, however, commentators seem to think that this woman’s actions represent such a serious financial “red flag” that it could potentially jeopardize the relationship.
Known only as u / hdhdjducch, the Redditor explained his dilemma, noting that he and his wife have been married for two years.
He wrote: “I recently noticed after reviewing bank statements that she was buying my birthday presents with my money for the past two years.” The first year, the purchase of the gift was not detected, he explained, because its cost was not “super expensive”.
For his most recent birthday, however, she chose to gift him a Rolex watch worth around $ 10,000.
“I felt bad because I hadn’t given her anything so expensive for a birthday present and told her that she shouldn’t have. I also wondered how she could afford it if she did. had not saved, “he said. “She said she wanted to do something good for me and she knew I liked it.”
Things got worse when, shortly after, the Redditor tried to buy a cup of coffee and found that his credit card had been declined. After calling his bank and checking his statements online, he realized that his card had been blocked due to an unusual activity: the purchase of the Rolex.
Notably, the Redditor and his wife do not share fully combined finances. “We have a shared account for paying the bills, but we also have our individual credit / debit cards for personal expenses,” he said. “She is an authorized user on my credit card, but she will only use it if I ask her to buy something for me, like work clothes.” As such, learning that the expensive gift had been purchased on her account came as a shock.
He decided to confront his wife, but in doing so, she claimed it had all been a mistake. She reportedly told him: “I thought I used the shared account, I must have removed the wrong card by accident. I’m sorry.
When he told her he wanted to return the watch, he said she told him to keep it. “You know you wanted one anyway. Please appreciate that I wanted to do something good for you,” she reportedly said.
The situation has left the majority of commentators indignant on behalf of u / hdhdjducch.

Adding u / JanusIsBlue: “It’s theft, and it’s wrong. The fact that she tries to downplay the purchase and dissuade you from canceling it makes me think that maybe it was intentional. “
For now, u / hdhdjducch seems focused on the return of the Rolex. “I’m not paying for it,” he wrote in the comments. “I tried to figure out how to make this thing that causes a headache.”
