Samsung unveils open source software for the CXL Memory platform
Samsung has unveiled its first open source software solution: the Scalable Memory Development Kit (SMDK).
Earlier this year, the company introduced the Compute Express Link (CXL) memory extender, which brought memory capacity and bandwidth to levels far exceeding current servers, a first in the world. ‘industry.
Samsung’s new solution facilitates the CXL memory platform with easy-to-integrate software tools. According to the company, SMDK will significantly increase the accessibility of CXL memory for data center system developers in the emerging markets of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and 5G.
The complete software kit includes libraries, reusable code, application programming interfaces (APIs) and more.
“For data centers and enterprise systems to run next generation memory solutions like CXL smoothly, the development of the corresponding software is a necessity,” said Cheolmin Park, vice president of product planning memory at Samsung Electronics.
Park added, “Today, Samsung reinforces its commitment to providing a total memory solution that encompasses both hardware and software, so that IT OEMs can integrate new technologies into their systems much more efficiently. “
Samsung’s SMDK allows main memory and CXL extender to work seamlessly in heterogeneous memory systems. CXL memory can easily be integrated into advanced computer systems with the SMDK, eliminating the need to modify or optimize application software settings.
Additionally, SMDK’s memory virtualization feature allows system designers to dynamically manage memory pools in shared memory architectures. Using a proprietary intelligent tiering engine, the SMDK can identify and configure the most appropriate memory types, capacities, and bandwidths for each use case.
Samsung’s SMDK is currently only available for limited testing and optimization. Samsung plans to open the tool by the first half of next year.
