Non-toxic cosmetics, lifestyle boutique opens in Kerrytown, Ann Arbor
ANN ARBOR, MI – Angeline Pratt used to source personal care products from popular beauty stores until she realized that much of the ingredients were toxic.
After studying dietetics, she recognized her passion for the cleanliness of the ingredients that she consumes or applies to her skin. Previously, she had no idea that the products she was using contained toxic elements.
“The $ 18 face creams are full of things that aren’t very good for us. I was going to Sephora and spending $ 200 on reputable makeup brands and had no idea what chemicals they were using, ”said Pratt.
As a result, she opened Bohmey Beauty, a non-toxic and cruelty-free beauty business selling hair, skin care, makeup, home goods and accessories. Pratt relied on online sales after opening its first store in March in downtown Adrian, following the implementation of stay-at-home ordering. It opened its second location on Saturday, November 21 at 407 N 5th Ave. on the second floor of Kerrytown Market and Shops.
Some of the ingredients of concern she found include formaldehyde in nail polish, parabens, which Pratt says are “very bad hormone disruptors,” petroleum jelly and mineral oil, which “can contaminate our bodies.” .
“When you see the word ‘natural’ or ‘clean’ or whatever, a lot of big brands are brainwashed. You can’t just trust the labels, ”said Pratt. “We dig a little deeper than just ingredients. We look for every ingredient in EWG base. Examine where the ingredients come from.
The products sold at Bohmey Beauty do not contain artificial fragrances, which Pratt said the fragrance industry was not required to list its ingredients in order to protect its formula from competitors.
Pratt cautions consumers against assuming that items in well-known convenience stores or makeup stores are clean. She recommends the Think Dirty app, which lists the ingredients of beauty products and determines whether they are considered clean or dirty based on a rating system.
Some of Pratt’s favorite brands that she sells at Bohmey Beauty include Ilia, Earth Harbor, Elate, Berlin Skin, and Ursa Major.
“They are very committed to the integrity of the ingredients,” Pratt said of Ilia. “They are very innovative and their products are beautifully packaged.
Elate also uses recycled bamboo compacts for customers to reuse the case. Bohmey Beauty also sells eco-friendly household items like candles, using coconut oil, beeswax or soybean base, clothing, accessories, paper goods and hair products.
