SONiC, the Linux-based open source network operating system, runs on switches from multiple vendors and application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs). It enables users to build network solutions while leveraging the strength of a large ecosystem and community.
“Keysight Technologies and AVIZ Networks have partnered to help accelerate the transition to an open network using SONiC through testing,” said Karam Gerges, vice president of AVIZ Networks. “PlugFest is a key initiative to support the commercial acceptance of open source network operating systems like SONiC. Test events such as PlugFest help vendors and the user community understand how data centers can successfully leverage disaggregated network architectures.
The results demonstrate the SONiC preparation
In addition to Keysight and AVIZ Networks, the open community test event brought together customers from SONiC’s Customer Advisory Board, including community members of Enterprise Network Operators, System Integrators, and Cloud Service Providers; suppliers, including ASIC manufacturers, Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs), Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), and Network Equipment Manufacturers (NEMs).
The PlugFest determined the maturity of SONiC on different hardware platforms from a customer perspective using a test suite from 6 vendors to validate feature sets, scalability and performance. The “essential test suite” validated the key functionalities listed by the SONiC community for management, layer 2 and layer 3 functionalities. The “scale test suite” characterized the ability to scale up. The scale of the control and data plan and the “deployment test suite” validated the NetOps integration in a Tier1 / Tier0 topology. Test content and methodologies have been reviewed and improved by the PlugFest Customer Advisory Board.
The tests assessed SONiC maturity for each stakeholder group (customers and vendors) and tested feature sets, scalability, and performance in five groups of key use cases. The results are the cumulative average of how well equipment from participating vendors tested to assess SONiC readiness in an open ecosystem in which customers have a choice of multi-vendor solutions for ASICs and switches. Test results from over 100 test cases were anonymized into an aggregate pass rate score totaling 100% each for each group:
- Switching platforms: 89%
- Management: 100%
- Functionality and L2 scale: 84%
- Functionality and L3 scale: 93%
- Operation Day-2: 86%
Test results indicate a high level of maturity in Layer 3 platform, management and functionality and scale, while Layer 2 functionality and scale requires some improvement. These results are aligned with SONiC’s original goal as a Cloud Network Operating System (NOS) showing progress in Layer 3 elements as work moves to Layer 2 in enterprise environments. and campus. The results of the Day 2 operation tested the actual functionality to demonstrate SONiC maturity in a realistic setting when a data center is in production.
“We believe PlugFest demonstrates that SONiC is on the way to unlocking the true potential of open networks,” said Nitesh Jha, senior director of business development at Keysight. “Some minor issues and performance limitations were discovered in areas requiring special attention. The Keysight and AVIZ Networks validation suite provides an efficient and unbiased benchmark benchmark for network operators and vendors to understand the operational state of specific SONiC implementations.
“Edgecore understands the unprecedented value of disaggregated infrastructure to provide customers with open choices in the design of their networks,” said Larry Ho, vice president of software engineering, Edgecore Networks. “We are proud to actively contribute to the SONiC community to accelerate and further expand the use of open networks. PlugFest testing gives vendors and end users the opportunity to see SONiC in action.
“As a leader and key supplier to the SONiC ecosystem, it is encouraging to see the positive results from supplier PlugFest as we demonstrate that Intel Tofino coupled with SONiC is robust and ready for wide deployment,” said Ed Doe , vice president of Intel and general manager of the barefoot division. “Powered by our Intel Tofino P4 Programmable Ethernet Switch ASICs working in concert with our 3rd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors, Intel 800 Series Network Adapters, and Intel FPGAs, customers can customize the platform to optimize their processing. network and AI packets. Needs.”
“As an established leader in open networks, NVIDIA is committed to open source at all layers of the stack, including with initiatives such as Linux networking and SONiC network operating systems,” said said David Iles, senior director of Ethernet switching at NVIDIA. “Open source has the power to accelerate innovation and PlugFests like these allow customers to test these solutions in real world scenarios. “
