As part of the new setup, Adobe offers two different versions of Magento services. The first, which still bears the name Magento, is a free open source platform with limited functionality. It’s great for the budget, but requires some technical skills to get up and running. The second is the comprehensive product now known as Adobe Commerce, which includes advanced marketing capabilities, PCI compliance, technical support, and other crucial tools.
Magento Open Source
The Open Source plan is free to install and provides the essentials you need to build an e-commerce site. Some of the features include:
- Website builder with drag and drop interface provides beginner friendly CMS where you can easily move blocks
- Site search and catalog management
- Mobile optimization
- Integrated checkout, checkout and shipping options
- App Marketplace for extensions and add-ons
Open source products offer great flexibility, but they also have some limitations. You will need to pay for general website maintenance, backups, your domain name, web hosting, and any customizations separately. The open source product does not include PCI compliance, so you will also need to pay separately. The total cost will vary depending on the services you choose.
While Magento used to offer several different products, it seems that everything is now consolidated into one product called Adobe Commerce. Unfortunately, Adobe doesn’t provide details on plans that might be available under the new brand. You will need to provide your contact details and wait for a sales representative to contact you and provide you with a personalized quote.
There are other features that enhance your e-commerce business when you sign up for Adobe Commerce:

- Customer loyalty tools: Set up promotions such as pop-up promotions, secret discounts or reward points for loyal customers
- Automatic updates: The software and infrastructure receive automatic updates to the latest system so you don’t have to worry about outdated plugins slowing down your website or not being compatible with the latest browsers.
- Page load priority: For high-volume e-commerce events, you’ll benefit from optimized page loading for high-traffic days thanks to the Content Delivery Network.
- Performance Tracking: You’ll get consistent data on customer journeys and how to make changes to avoid losing sales.
Other additional costs
Besides the cost of Magento or Adobe Commerce, you need to consider various monthly and one-time costs.
The cost of the web developer is not always necessary if you have an in-house expert, but you should factor this time into your costs for setting up and running e-commerce operations.
There are also one-time costs to consider:
- Themes: $17 to $399 for store theme; $5,000 or more for a custom theme
- Extensions and complements: Free up to $2,000 (in Adobe Commerce store)
