Aiven: 91% of developers say open source is in their future

The adoption of open source software by businesses has grown rapidly, and 91% of developers said in a recent survey that they expect open source to be part of their organizational software plans in the future. the coming years, according to Aiven, a software company that combines open source technologies with cloud infrastructure.
The survey revealed a growing positivity towards open source among cloud and database developers in the UK, with respondents citing twice as many pros than cons. The most popular benefit listed by the developers was the transparency of open source code, which makes it easy to find and fix bugs quickly. 69% of respondents identified this as a key benefit. Other benefits include reduced vendor lockout (53%) and the ability to create your own features (53%). The most cited barrier to using open source was maintenance, which 52% of respondents saw as a challenge. Other challenges included configuring or installing software (48%), lack of support (45%), and hidden costs (27%).
Faced with these identified challenges, companies are looking for solutions to facilitate the adoption of open source. 35% of respondents said they would opt for a managed open source solution in the future, allowing them to avoid the burden of installation and maintenance and spend more time focusing on critical tasks of the company. As businesses look to grow after the pandemic, the demand for managed solutions will likely continue to grow.
Aiven’s research was conducted by Resonance on behalf of Aiven in January / February 2021. The study interviewed 200 UK developers who work in large companies and specialize in cloud and database technology. .
